Presidents Newsletter

This half-yearly report is for the members to explain what the committee has been doing for them so far, this financial year.

Please be aware that most of this information is available in the minutes of the meetings on the table beside the bar. They are more concise than what I would put together.

The list so far.

  1. New policies adopted, prizes, strategic plan, and operational plan.
  2. Privacy
  3. Complaints policy and procedures
  4. Code of conduct
  5. List of members who have first aid experience
  6. Medical events and the expectation of behaviour during these events
  7. Media/communications

New policies.

Because the club's structure has changed, we have had to alter policies for almost everything within the club.

This includes how competitions are run and how the prizes are paid out.

So, if in the future you miss out on a prize by “lot” or on “count back”, you can blame the committee rather than your bad luck.

Dave Gilkison has developed a new computer program to help work out the prize pool for our tournaments.

We have completed the production of a strategic plan and developed an operational plan, which will assist with planning for the club going forward.

Privacy.

Nowadays, privacy is one of the most important items on any agenda; it is a serious issue, and we expect everyone to respect the privacy of everyone else in the club. Because of this, we have had to change the way things are done concerning the information supplied to us by our members.

Complaints policy and procedures.

We have outlined a new complaints policy and the steps to follow when complaining to the committee.

 Code of Conduct.

We have reviewed and updated the codes of conduct and brought the penalties for any breach up to date.

Membership form.

The committee has also updated the membership form to make it more relevant for today's golfer.

We are in the process of:

  • Reviewing and updating the job descriptions for the various roles within the club.
  • Updating the constitution under the new rules of the Incorporated Societies Act.
  • Including within that change, a clause regarding charity status for the club.

As you may realise, that will require a special meeting for approval, which is slated for August this year.

First Aid.

Under the Health and Safety Act, we are committed to complying as best we can with this act, and just as a general “wanting to be as helpful as we can be” when the need arises, we wish to have a list of those who are willing to go on said list, of those who are trained either professionally or just for instance to satisfy their employers commitment to first aid. So that if the need arises, and first aid is required, we know someone whom we can call on.

If this is you, please contact the secretary. Unfortunately, this is an unpaid position, but we all appreciate anyone who puts their name forward.

Medical events.

Recently, we experienced a medical event at the club when a member was required to be airlifted from the course. An incident report has been filed under the Health and Safety Act. In the report, there was a note to the effect that while the aircraft was on the course engaged in preparing the patient for transport, some golfers in the vicinity of the aircraft continued with their round, in a position that was a hindrance to the aircraft.

In the game of golf, we are taught to show consideration to all on the course and to especially give way to anyone working on the course, like the green keeper or his helpers. This should translate to anyone engaged in providing medical aid to anyone on the course, whether they are a golfer, a spectator, or the public. Therefore, the people involved should take a good, hard look at themselves and consider how they would have felt if it were them in the aircraft, either as a patient or a medic.

I must admit this is not something I ever thought I would need to put into writing under any circumstances.

Media/communications.

At present, we have an excellent media person, in the form of Marie Hargadon, but for some reason, she has decided to advance her career and move on to the position of Ladies' club captain at the end of this year. That means this position will be vacant for a few years. Unfortunately, we cannot afford to have that long a gap in our profile picture.

Also, I don’t believe one person should have to do the amount of work required to raise the profile of the club. So, we are looking for a group of volunteers to take on the role. (3-4 people)

Some of the skills that will be required are:

  1. Being able to talk.
  2. Being capable of taking relevant photos and videos.
  3. Know what Facebook and Instagram are.
  4. Be a capable typist.
  5. Have interviewing skills.

Once again, if this is something you can do or would like to try, contact the secretary or me for a position in this important group.

Summary.

This is a list of where we have come from and where we are headed. We still have a long way to go and lots of golf to play.

If you would like to be a part of the committee or any of the roles that keep the golf club going, contact any committee member, and we can help you start your journey.

Thank you.
